Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University Hosts International Seminar on “What Does the IMF Do? An Overview and the Regional Economic Outlook”
On 19 October 2026, the Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University, organized an international seminar entitled “What Does the IMF Do? An Overview and the Regional Economic Outlook” at Room 101, Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University, Tha Prachan Campus.
The Faculty was honored to welcome Dr. Peter Breuer, Assistant Director, ASEAN 2 and Mission Chief for Thailand at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the guest speaker. Dr. Breuer shared his expertise and perspectives on the role of the IMF, as well as recent economic developments and the outlook for the region and Thailand.
The seminar was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Juthathip Jongwanich, Editor of Thailand and The World Economy (TWE), Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University. Assistant Professor Dr. Chalermpong Kongcharoen, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Faculty of Economics, Thammasat University, delivered the welcoming remarks to the guest speaker and participants.
The seminar covered three key areas. The first focused on the role and mandate of the IMF, providing participants with a better understanding of why the organization was established and how it operates.
The second area addressed the economic outlook for Asia and ASEAN, with particular emphasis on the IMF’s role in regional surveillance. This process helps identify common economic challenges faced by countries across the region and provides a broader perspective on regional economic developments.
The seminar also featured an in-depth discussion on the Thai economy, particularly the slowdown in Thailand’s structural transformation. The discussion explored factors behind this trend, as well as possible policy directions and measures that could support economic restructuring and enhance Thailand’s long-term growth potential.
The seminar provided a valuable opportunity for students, faculty members, and interested participants to exchange views with an expert from a leading international economic organization. It also contributed to a deeper understanding of the IMF’s role and the interconnections between global, regional, ASEAN, and Thai economic developments.
