EC601 History of Economic Thought

Economic thought in its philosophical and historical aspects. The course begins with the issues of epistemology and methodology in Economics and Political Economy. It presents and analyzes theories from different schools of thought. Classical. Marxism. Keynesianism. Neoclassicism; Socialism. Post Keynesianism; Institutionalism. The economic, political, social and historical contexts of each of these schools of thought and theories will also be analyzed.

EC602 Institutional Economics

The effect of institutions upon the behavior of economic agents, the interaction between economic agents, and resulting performance. The evolution of institutions. Institutional design. Economic governance (at the market, state, and community levels.) Topics to be discussed include: economic rent, power, norms, social capital, law and economics and the economics of politics.

Study of microeconomic theory such as consumer behavior, the relationship between utility maximization and expenditure minmization problem, intertemporal consumption, consumption and risk. Theory of firm, production and cost, relationship between profit maximization and cost minimization problem. Topics covered also inculde market structures and behavior, game theory, factor markets, general equilibrium and welfare economics, and impacts of externalities, public goods, asymmetric information on level of welfare and social choice theory.

Analysis of joint equilibrium in product market, money market, and foreign exchange market ( the ISLM-BP model) as well as changes in equilibrium. The relationship between the product market and the labor market. The model of aggregate demand and aggregate supply in closed and open economies. Inflation, unemployment, and economic stabilization policies. Growth theory such as Solow Growth, Ramsey Cass- Koopman, Overlapping Generation, New Growth Theory. Applications of macroeconomic theory to analyze economic situations. Dynamic macroeconomic theory. Dynamic programming and other recursive modeling techniques. Issues in dynamic fiscal and Monetary policy. Cost of inflation and time inconsistency problem.

EC623 Mathematics for Data Science

The purpose of this course is to provide a mathematically rigorous introduction to these developments with emphasis on methods and their analysis. The topics include Vector and matrices representation in data science problems, solving systems of linear algebra computing and programming, applying of vector operations, norms, length and distance, similarity measurements, matrix decompositions, matrices operations and applying, derivative, gradient and applying, probability and distribution, introduction to computational optimization techniques, data learning models, linear regression, dimensionality reduction techniques.

EC624 Machine Learning for Data Science in Economics and Finance

Prerequisite: Have earned credits of EC623

We will introduce the foundational machine learning techniques used in computational economics and describe their applications to economic and financial data. Learn how to work with large, complex, and noisy economic and financial datasets. The course will emphasize theoretical foundations, mathematical derivation and implementation of the algorithms, and their applications

Studies econometric methods such as ordinary least squares estimation. Econometric problems arising from the violation of classical linear regression model assumptions and solutions. Generalized least squares. The method of instrument variables. Maximum likelihood estimation methods. The Generalized method of moments. Panel data and time series analysis. Practical applications of these models are offered, using econometrics software and interpreting the estimated results.
